Quoted in the Grove:

Everybody lies, but it doesn’t matter because nobody listens. ~Nick Diamos

It is a common delusion that you make things better by talking about them.         ~Dame Rose Macaulay

For many of us, the march from Selma to Montgomery was about protest and prayer. Legs are not lips and walking is not kneeling. And yet our legs uttered songs. Even without words, our march was worship. I felt my legs were praying.   ~Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

latent, shine

There were laugh-out-loud, too-incapacitated-to-play moments and a great lot of silliness at GaryBob and noxy’s ‘Fear is Fun, but Laughing is Even More Fun’ Halloween party. The only dark moments were at Pendora‘s haunted graveyard, while a game of dice led to scurrilous accusations of underworld connections

~Stejovis @the Tally Sign:  Answering Bell – Tears like fallen leaves belong to the living world, shed for that which no longer abides

Library Table: No new drops

Prewritten:

~Stejovis: There’s a Catch to It ~ An instructive guide for campsite fishing employing all the usages of ‘catch’ in the telling; only the catch-up for his burger escapes a mention. It takes a dictionary to beat a thesaurus for word fun … then there’s this

~BarTalk: Search and Destroy

Impromptu: forest, clear

~Pippin: Fast as We Can – Racing down aisles of words in their place on the shelves, pulling down selected ones to assemble for best effect, for starkness of image, for darkness of mood

~Greenie: Upon a Forest Clear – Not fleeing from, but flying to; riding the back of her friend to parts unknown, Greenie finds a forest, then separation and reunion in a pocket world of magic. She and Firestorm find a home at last, because not much can go really wrong when your best friend is a dragon

~Stejovis: The Forest Can’t See You Anymore – Kudzu encrusted branches and twigs are the first to go before the tree dies, before the forest of mind, the vibrant wildlife forest begins the dying that’s visibly gaining in the rearview mirror

Writers in Residence:

~Greymane @Greyed Expectations 2: ~3~ of 6 – Millions turn from each other in life, tears vie with indifference and lose; what comes after the grave that these millions did not choose?

~Whitefeather @Amethyst moonlight – A solitary scroll that contains a single line; example of an expression that cannot be shortened, expanded to advantage or improved in any way: I’d give up forever to touch you

~Piffin @Cinderella Sneakers: To whom it may concern – A note that takes a contrary position to John Donne’s, No Man Is an Island; that distills Dante’s nine circles of hell into the disillusioned eyes peering back from a mirror; that echoes Jackson Browne’s question in Doctor My Eyes, with intention to quit school

A theme seems to emerge from Piff’s writing this week, so a link to Mr Browne’s question. Listen for a possible remedy (however temporary), from the good Dr around the 2:27 mark. Take one, repeat as necessary, call in the morning

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCTYxIsLThA

~Jessalee @Creative Intentions: autumn chapstick – An idyllic autumn jog past wheat fields, mooing pastures and shady woods, gains its needed contrast in the low-point image of melted chapstick in a roadside swamp of debris

~VirtualJester @The Thought Tree: Coming in from the Desert, a Journey from Here to There – Many years later, Jester writes of his arrival in There: his long sojourn walking a Therein desert until two avies in the distance resolved into Zsa Zsa and Niner (another friend lost to the Reaper),  just before bailing out and pulling the plug on There

~Cwby4ever: FAMILY ISN’T ALWAYS BLOOD – You get to choose your friends where family should have been

The real meaning of enlightenment is to gaze with undimmed eyes on all darkness. ~Nikos Kazantzakis

I have a simple philosophy. Fill what’s empty. Empty what’s full. And scratch where it itches. ~Alice Roosevelt Longworth

I have no solutions, I can only offer chocolate. ~CM Pavelka

Catch and Release (suggested by: AidenScott)

GaryBob and noxy are hosting a Halloween Party on Sat, 10/27, and everyone is invited.* Their “Fear is Fun!” event starts at 6:00 pm PT, 9 ET. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it’s being held at an undisclosed location (easier to hide the bodies if something goes wrong). More worrisome still are the two miscreants hosting it. Wouldn’t miss it for worlds

*Instructions and a link will be provided on a There.doc placed on Writers Platform, or IM noxy or GB to be summoned. Proofs of insurance and an updated will are required

A couple of Bacio scooters have been set out near the Wordgrove sign for those visiting who’d like to check out the grove, but aren’t keen on walking it. Some nudging and shoving between the scooters may be seen. This is their jousting for your attention. Both want to be your ride. We suggest you observe their play before choosing. Some will prefer the less aggressive, runt-of-the-litter scooter for a leisurely tour, but we recommend the friskier model for more excitement. Not as fast but more agile than other rides in There, the Bacio is the only safe vehicle for racing flat out thru  trees in the grove … usually

No new video suggestions have crossed the transom, so one has been pulled from the newsletter’s early archives. As illustration of our desire for diverse, even surprising music, imagine break dancers doing their hip hop thing over Pachelbel’s Canon played by a small orchestra of kayagums (Korean zithers)

The Glass Library Table:

~Piffin: Three Cigarettes (10/07/12) and, Word Games ~ Sept/Oct

~Jessalee: NANO! and razzmop ~ Jessa’s very brief conversation with hubby Juke, still befuddled from sleep; an example of how words and coined phrases become the inside jokes that become traditions, the long threads that weave families together

Prewritten: squirrel, helmet

~BarTalk: A Nutter Squirrel and the Helmet of Nuts

Impromptu: permanent injury

~AidenScott: Permanent Injury – With trust blighted and love benighted, the kiss of a Boy becomes the kiss of betrayal; our poet takes dead aim with a dictionary, and connects

~Jessalee: Speed Dating – In a world of movie meets-cute, the acid tang of two lemons meeting, dripping with tartness, make for a palate cleansing laugh-out-loud moment

~Piffin: Romance – A syncopated rhyme scheme coheres by section: surrenders to world-weariness in one part, refuses place on a pedestal in another, overlays the rhythm of I-want-you onto a beating heart, ends with a plea for the shuddering release of that …

~BarTalk: anatomy of a lesson

~~

Writers in Residence:

~Whitefeather @Firelight, and the Moonlight: Erica’s Haiku Poetry Whitefeather gives her young daughter a venue for her poetry, three haiku that capture three observations from nature. Erica shares a love of words with her mother and earns her place as  poet here

~Jessalee @Creative Intentions: Ten Coffees a Day – It began as any addiction, with reluctance, then slowly taking over. But this one keeps the breadwinner focused safely at work, gives an uplifting prod to mood, and energy for his progeny after

~Piffin @Cinderella Sneakers: Solomon’s Calliope (excerpt) – Imagine a future where sympathy in the human heart has been replaced by the need to survive, and greed for another meal plays trump in every decision. Imagine the woman who thrives here. Meet Savannah

~Greymane @Greyed Expectations 2: Scroll ~2~ of 6 – Greymane’s dream continues: Everywhere the children of Light and Darkness flee; bastard shadows hide for their lives behind every available object, fearful of the Promise and the Night that eat their young

From the east side Perimeter PAZs:

~GaryBob @Wordgrove Outpost (BABS): From the sands of time below to his frontier outpost overhead, the hunt for fun and meaning begins here, chasing thru the jungles of conversation. Home of MATO and Stargazing

~AdrianScott @nd the Case of the Vanishing Paz: Stay tuned for future developments

A healthy male adult bore consumes each year one and a half times his own weight in other people’s patience. ~John Updike

The man who lets himself be bored is even more contemptible than the bore. ~Samuel Butler

Boredom is the feeling that everything is a waste of time; serenity, that nothing is. ~Thomas Szasz

Wordgrove would like to welcome new members: Namron, OdileC, ArcticRose, Stejovis

Except for Stejovis, all are musicians who play individually and together in There. It is a particular pleasure for this editor (not a musician, but one who needs music), to welcome this important language to Wordgrove. Perhaps a concert can be arranged

A new Tally sign has been raised near Writers Platform and it is for the use of those who would like to see their poetry featured large. Altho best suited for the tally poem, any short verse (using the diagonal (/) to designate new lines) is acceptable. Please use this opportunity to share your work in a new way with others. Contact me or leave a scroll at the sign with your submission. More information is available in a scroll at the base of the sign

A note concerning the posting of this newsletter to WordPress: Since this will be the complete edition readily available to everyone, with overdue drops and updates to include, a late edit will go into it before it goes online. This may be hours later in the same day. The book edition on Writers Platform will be available soon after the club mail goes out

This week’s music video features an artist dwarfed by his creation and his vision that towers over him. While visually arresting, the music is gentle behind it, good for a Sunday afternoon. Suggested by TelMeggido (not of There), who otherwise prefers his music to be neck-snapping or throbbing

Library Table:
~Piffin: Three Cigarettes (WGP&R 10/07/12)
~BarTalk: In Pursuit of Music, parts i & ii (from archives)

Prewritten: fish, custard
~Piffin: Where Pirates Lie Dreaming
A frolicking love poem with bold buccaneers and stampeding sharks; gambols with wordplay, gets frisky with a mermaid in undersea sex

~BarTalk: something fishy here

Impromptu: pious, subtle
~Piffin: Fire on the Sea
The dueling field this time is the sea of self. With dual desires for the adventures of freedom and an inborn craving for inner peace battling each other; lashed together, they drift exhausted and nibble each other into symbiotic oblivion

~BarTalk: Bullets and Beer

~Greenie breaks new ground by bringing her poetry to the stairwell of Writers Platform; on the bird fountain:
Haiku Moon – The Moon as a bowl for collecting stars for compounding into wishes

Writers in Residence:                                                                                                                                                                                        This is the Post & Review’s Perimeter edition, featuring the outlying PAZs of west Wordgrove

~Whitefeather @The Writers Sanctuary: With abundant wild life, porch and patio space, this haven blends the view from a hillside overlooking WG with the sunset palette she uses to color her sky. Beth’s aerial retreat matches any cabin by the lake as a tonic for inspiration

~Stejovis @Meditatio: Visually rich and overflowing, but the words in his one drop are spare and precise. In his own words:
For Contemplation
words: // Nature sends messages // without them

~VirtualJester @The Thought Tree: Roots Resurrected – A seedling from his childhood grows into its arboreal adolescence becoming Jester’s Thought Tree, his place for reading, resting and ruminating. Trees and abutting walls are mortal enemies however, and aesthetics has no defense against utility. Years later, the enduring loss of his reading companion finds a remedy in There and Wordgrove. Jester has a message board out; stop by, say ‘hi and leave a thought of your own

~FrankyNoob @Faith Re-Tree-it: A place of nurturing in a spiritual way; requires ascending a tree to access its offerings
Autumn Rains
An introduction to the book, Cottage Quotes, which provides daily lessons, some of which will be used here and in his online blog (link provided) as a starting point for his own thoughts

Next week: East side Perimeter PAZs, with an exciting new music video provided by you!
