THIS EDITION: enter
Quoted In The Grove:
Words can have no single fixed meaning. Like wayward electrons, they can spin away from their initial orbit and enter a wider magnetic field. No one owns them or has a proprietary right to dictate how they will be used.
~David Lehman
Language leads a double life – and so does the novelist. You chat with family and friends, you attend to your correspondence, you consult menus and shopping lists, you observe road signs, and so on. Then you enter your study, where language exists in quite another form – as the stuff of patterned artifice.
~Martin Amis
The inner spaces that a good story lets us enter are the old apartments of religion.
~John Updike
EndQuote:
At the entrance, my bare feet on the dirt floor, Here, gusts of heat; at my back, white clouds. I stare and stare. It seems I was called for this: To glorify things just because they are.
~Czeslaw Milosz

Basically, I believe the world is a jungle, and if it’s not a bit of a jungle in the home, a child cannot possibly be fit to enter the outside world.
~Bette Davis
If men and women are to understand each other, to enter into each other’s nature with mutual sympathy, and to become capable of genuine comradeship, the foundation must be laid in youth.
~Havelock Ellis

It’s one thing to show your love for someone when everything is going fine and life is smooth. But when the ‘in sickness and in health’ part kicks in and sickness does enter your lives, you’re tested. Your resilience is tested.
~Patti Davis
~
A man’s heart may have a secret sanctuary where only one woman may enter, but it is full of little anterooms which are seldom vacant.
~Helen Rowland
Unlike ‘real relationships’, ‘virtual relationships’ are easy to enter and to exit. They look smart and clean, feel easy to use, when compared with the heavy, slow-moving, messy real stuff.
~Zygmunt Bauman
My feelings are those of a schoolboy getting in sight of the holidays. Or more seriously, my feelings are perhaps those of a matador who has decided not to enter the bull ring.
~Geoffrey Fisher
~
I think once you enter the dating world and you realise it’s nothing like those Disney movies you watched when you were a little girl, you just become more guarded.
~Megan Fox
A lot of my emotional issues come from dealing with the opposite sex. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll be retired before I can finally enter into a healthy relationship.
~Adam Levine
I do believe that we baby-boomers are reinventing ageing as we enter it. We’re living longer and expecting more from life; the success of ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,’ and other films and novels about finding love late in life, have shown that if we’re up for it, there are adventures awaiting us.
~Deborah Moggach
~
It is not her body that he wants but it is only through her body that he can take possession of another human being, so he must labor upon her body, he must enter her body, to make his claim.
~Joyce Carol Oates
Metaphors are dangerous. Love begins with a metaphor. Which is to say, love begins at the point when a woman enters her first word into our poetic memory.
~Milan Kundera
Only a fortunate few seek the Beloved. Only a blessed few seek to enter the shrine of the heart.
~Dada Vaswani
I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay, and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish.
~Dick Cheney
I think love has something to do with allowing a person you claim to love to enter a larger arena than the one you create for them.
~Sting

Those who have never entered upon scientific pursuits know not a tithe of the poetry by which they are surrounded.
~Herbert Spencer
Reason is like an open secret that can become known to anyone at any time; it is the quiet space into which everyone can enter through his own thought.
~Karl Jaspers
To enter by reason means to realize the essence through instruction and to believe that all living things share the same true nature, which isn’t apparent because it’s shrouded by sensation and delusion.
~Bodhidharma
The sanitary and mechanical age we are now entering makes up for the mercy it grants to our sense of smell by the ferocity with which it assails our sense of hearing.
~Havelock Ellis
~
Once a disease has entered the body, all parts which are healthy must fight it: not one alone, but all. Because a disease might mean their common death. Nature knows this; and Nature attacks the disease with whatever help she can muster.
~Paracelsus

We have entered an age in which education is not just a luxury permitting some men an advantage over others. It has become a necessity without which a person is defenseless in this complex, industrialized society. We have truly entered the century of the educated man.
~Lyndon B Johnson
When I climb into my car, I enter my destination into a GPS device, whose spatial memory supplants my own. I have photographs to store the images I want to remember, books to store knowledge and now, thanks to Google, I rarely have to remember anything more than the right set of search terms to access humankind’s collective memory.

I didn’t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
~Steve Jobs
I will not carry a thing to its culmination simply because I entered in. I may have said I wanted it, but I will have the courage to say, I have changed my mind.
~Muriel Strode

Almost a quarter of our planet is a single mountain range and we didn’t enter it until after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to the moon. So we went to the moon, played golf up there, before we went to the largest feature on our own planet.

Perhaps no place in any community is so totally democratic as the town library. The only entrance requirement is interest.
~Lady Bird Johnson
School is such an encouraging and safe environment. It’s filled with idealism and just really working on your craft. When you enter the business world — where art meets commerce — it can become quite depressing.
~Troy Garity

The food that enters the mind must be watched as closely as the food that enters the body.
~Pat Buchanan
Criticism in the universities, I’ll have to admit, has entered a phase where I am totally out of sympathy with 95% of what goes on. It’s Stalinism without Stalin.

If we choose to walk into a forest where a tiger lives, we are taking a chance. If we swim in a river where crocodiles live, we are taking a chance. If we visit the desert or climb a mountain or enter a swamp where snakes have managed to survive, we are taking a chance.
~Peter Benchley
We provoke a shark every time we enter the water where sharks happen to be, for we forget: The ocean is not our territory – it’s theirs.
~Peter Benchley
What is the good of your stars and trees, your sunrise and the wind, if they do not enter into our daily lives?
~E M Forster
I have resolved on an enterprise that has no precedent and will have no imitator. I want to set before my fellow human beings a man in every way true to nature; and that man will be myself.
~Jean-Jacques Rousseau

At home in Ghaziabad, everyone is a pure vegetarian. In fact, when I want to cook non-veg there, my mum shoos me out on the terrace where I have my cooking utensils. I’m told categorically that whatever non-veg or egg, etc., that I have to cook, I should do upstairs and not enter her kitchen at all.
~Suresh Raina
No pills, not even aspirin, and certainly no supplements ever enter my mouth – everything I need comes from my fish and vegetarian diet, which incorporates many different kinds of fruit and vegetables every week.
~David H Murdock
~
I think of animals more as spirits that come and go. They enter our lives at a particular time and they leave at a particular time. The whole glorious history of animals with people is about joy and connection. It’s about loving this creature and letting this creature love you.
~Jon Katz
Fall in love with a dog, and in many ways you enter a new orbit, a universe that features not just new colors but new rituals, new rules, a new way of experiencing attachment.
~Caroline Knapp

No enterprise can exist for itself alone. It ministers to some great need, it performs some great service, not for itself, but for others; or failing therein, it ceases to be profitable and ceases to exist.
~Calvin Coolidge
Free enterprise empowers entrepreneurs who have ideas and imagination, investors who take risks, and workers who hone their skills and offer their labor.

That’s free enterprise, friends: freedom to gamble, freedom to lose. And the great thing – the truly democratic thing about it – is that you don’t even have to be a player to lose.
~Barbara Ehrenreich
If we enter into the kind of world that Google likes, the world that Google wants, it’s a world where information is copied so much on the Internet that nobody knows where it came from anymore, so there can’t be any rights of authorship.
~Jaron Lanier
Banks operate like a man who either wears his trousers round his chest, stifling breathing, as now, or round his ankles, exposing his assets. We want their trousers tied round their middle: steady lending growth; particularly to productive British business, especially small scale enterprise.

~Paul J Meyer
To begin to think with purpose, is to enter the ranks of those strong ones who only recognize failure as one of the pathways to attainment.
~James Allen
~
Early on, when I was quite young and going from job to job, I was foolish enough to sometimes speak to my fellow workers: ‘Hey, the boss can come in here at any moment and lay all of us off, just like that, don’t you realize that?’ They would just look at me. I was posing something that they didn’t want to enter their minds.
~Charles Bukowski
There are two rules I’ve always tried to live by: turn left, if you’re supposed to turn right; go through any door that you’re not supposed to enter. It’s the only way to fight your way through to any kind of authentic feeling in a world beset by fakery.
~Malcolm Mclaren
Probably the greatest harm done by vast wealth is the harm that we of moderate means do ourselves when we let the vices of envy and hatred enter deep into our own natures.
~Theodore Roosevelt
Russia and other countries’ declining population worries? Perhaps needy, initially, but America is where the world’s most dynamic pioneers and dreamers want to bring their productivity. The emigrants’ good is to add their labor, their creativity, their loyalty and mongrel blood to our tax base. Color doesn’t enter that equation.

It is precisely as though I were possessed by some other spirit when I enter on a new task of acting, as though something within me presses a switch and my own consciousness merges into some other, greater, more vital being.
~Conrad Veidt
I think I’m very permeable. I can very easily, without even choosing to do it, enter the life of another. Or, to put it in a more modest and accurate way, for that life to enter mine.
~John Berger
We’re all driven to premieres or nightclubs and seen the rope separating those who can enter and those who can’t. Well, there’s also a velvet rope we have inside of us, keeping others from knowing our feelings.
~Janet Jackson

All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.

~Simon Bird
I write for television, I plan the story on whiteboard wallpaper in my office, using a system created by the American writer Dan Harmon. It’s remarkably simple: a character wants something; they enter a new world and adapt to it; they get what they want, re-enter the old world and change.
~Graham Linehan

~Ralph Fiennes
You’re creating a different world and the actor’s job is to be able to convince the audience to enter into that world, whether it be actually something that you recognize from your own life or not.
~Christian Bale
One of the things I love about acting is that I can enter into these other people’s lives. But going back to being me at the end of the day is very important, too. That process of remembering who I am.
~Sally Hawkins
~
With the CGI, suddenly there’s a thousand enemies instead of six – the army goes off into the horizon. You don’t need that. The audience loses its relationship with the threat on the screen. That’s something that’s consistently happening and it makes these movies like video games and that’s a soulless enterprise. It’s all kinetics without emotion
~Harrison Ford
Harrison Ford was pretty content as a carpenter who thought it would be nice to work on TV and ended up being the biggest film star in the history of cinema.
~Dirk Benedict
~
I think you’ll find a lot of actors will be interested in history because it sparks your imagination so much. When you enter a period of history, your imagination just goes wild in creating the world, which is really what acting is.
~Tom Mison

~Jonathan Demme
What’s nice about what we have is when you enter the set, the world of film, it becomes this real cocoon, very different from all the publicity. That’s the fun part.
~Mira Nair

I have been refused entrance on the buses because I would not pay my fare at the front and go around to the rear door to enter. That was the custom if the bus was crowded up to the point where the white passengers would start occupying.
~Rosa Parks
New Orleans invented the brown paper bag party – usually at a gathering in a home – where anyone darker than the bag attached to the door was denied entrance. The brown bag criterion survives as a metaphor for how the black cultural elite quite literally establishes caste along color lines within black life.
~Michael Eric Dyson
A racially integrated community is a chronological term timed from the entrance of the first black family to the exit of the last white family.
~Saul Alinsky
My big entrance into this industry was playing an enslaved person, which is an absolute cliche of people of color.

Eventually, competition and adventure wane, and I enter my ibuprofen phase. I think if you look at NXT, the one guy who seems like he would belong in a WrestleMania main event is Nakamura because of the aura and the buzz that he gets. He is able to grab the attention of people who don’t really know who he is right away with his mannerisms and entrance – by the time he gets to the ring, you are kind of hooked.
~Kevin Owens
Wrestling has a tremendous entrance plan. You come in, and it’s, ‘Boy, here you are. It’s rock and roll; it’s wonderful.’ It’s got no exit plan.
~Roddy Piper
If you are watching television and two guys come out and you are already able to tell what the finish of that match is based on entrances alone, that’s a problem.
~Shawn Spears
It wasn’t until later in my career that I really focused on the importance on making an entrance.

I always really enjoyed Edge’s entrance theme. Also Stone Cold. WWE once asked me in an interview, if I had to change my entrance music, whose would I choose, and I said Edge. So they created a video of me using that song, and I was like, ‘I’m in love.’

~Eddie Van Halen
The cardinal rule for any performer is that they should know themselves before they enter the spotlight, and I didn’t. I was just Neil and I did what I was supposed to do. I was supposed to get married, so I got married. I was supposed to get a job, so I looked for work.

I find myself drawn to that period where children are about to leave childhood behind. When you’re 12 years old, you still have one foot in childhood; the other is poised to enter a completely new stage of life. Your innocent understanding of the world moves towards something messier and more complicated, and once it does you can never go back. ~Khaled Hosseini

Imagine it’s 1981. You’re an artist, in love with art, smitten with art history. You’re also a woman, with almost no mentors to look to; art history just isn’t that into you. Any woman approaching art history in the early eighties was attempting to enter an almost foreign country, a restricted and exclusionary domain that spoke a private language.
~Jerry Saltz
Women are always told, ‘You’re not going to make it, its too difficult, you can’t do that, don’t enter this competition, you’ll never win it,’ — they need confidence in themselves and people around them to help them to get on.

Even when a man and a woman perform equally well in a task — say, solving math problems — men are more willing to enter competitions based on that task. Men also show less risk aversion.
~Sendhil Mullainathan
At no point do I wish to be in conflict with any man or masculine thought. It doesn’t enter my consciousness. Art is anonymous. It’s not competitive with men. It’s a complementary contribution.
~Barbara Hepworth
The heart of a woman falls back with the night,
And enters some alien cage in its plight,

The problem with feminism in the second wave was that we fought so much among ourselves, and I think we did so much damage to the movement… and I think the next wave, the third wave, is women mentoring younger women and women helping younger women to enter the political process and the writing world.

I didn’t enter Miss S.A. because I thought I was the most beautiful woman in S.A., I entered because it’s one of the few platforms that give women the ability to lead and I knew I had a powerful voice and message to send out.

§ GLASS TABLE:
~bckpackr: excerpt • Trip to Greece (conclusion)
Sure enough, the village of Skala – just Skala – existed!
In reality, it was more like a sand-road leading to a settlement of about 40 houses that were just a kilometer from the beach. The houses were ramshackle and wooden like an old western ghost-town; In fact, that’s *exactly* what it looked like, but the most beautiful thing about Skala, was that tourism hadn’t discovered this amazing little idyll!
When I stood on that beach, it was the cleanest, bluest and wildest waves of the Mediterranean that I had ever seen! It was deserted perfection! Looking to my left and right, there was not one house, not one hotel, no people, nothing but empty sand and waves as far as the eye could see!
It was paradise!
Standing with my back to the wildest, bluest waves I’d never imagined and looking inland, the view, except for the few houses of Skala, was of sand and foot-high grass, browned in the sun and looking like a sea of shimmering pale gold, as far as the eye could see!
All else was blue sky and summer wind! There was no sign of ‘civilization’ here whatsoever!
I spent two days there, asking questions and enduring the xenophobia of a suspicious bar-owner (everyone else was open, warm and friendly), until at last I found some people who had met and known my brother!
They told me that he had left Skala just two days before I got there, because the Olympics were being held in Barcellona, in Spain, and he thought there might be more work to be found there.
How we missed each other, I will never know and cannot imagine, so I hitch-hiked back up to just below Athens and then turned westward toward the city of Patras. What in the world was I hoping for? My bread was gone, and I had no means of crossing the ocean again to get back to Italy!
So how did I get back to Italy from Greece? Well, that’s a story for another time!
