There is no mystery to creation. To create is to respond. The question is not, What am I writing about?, but rather, What am I responding to?
~Gavin McCrea
Artschwager’s art always involves looking closely at surfaces, questions what an object is, wants to make you forget the name of the thing you’re looking at so that it might mushroom in your mind into something that triggers unexpected infinities.
~Jerry Saltz
What does that represent? There was never any question in plastic art, in poetry, in music, of representing anything. It is a matter of making something beautiful, moving, or dramatic – this is by no means the same thing.
~Fernand Leger

The only question to ask yourself is, how much are you willing to sacrifice to achieve this success?
~Larry Flynt

~A R Ammons
Poetry is a succession of questions which the poet constantly poses.
~Vicente Aleixandre
The best books are the ones that ask the most questions.
~Jonathan Safran Foer
The stupidity of people comes from having an answer for everything. The wisdom of the novel comes from having a question for everything. …The novelist teaches the reader to comprehend the world as a question. There is wisdom and tolerance in that attitude. In a world built on sacrosanct certainties the novel is dead.
~Milan Kundera
The most important training, though, is to experience life as a writer, questioning everything, inventing multiple explanations for everything. If you do that, all the other things will come; if you don’t, there’s no hope for you.

§ GLASS TABLE
~bckpakr: excerpt • Trip to Greece
Once on that boat, I was surrounded by people and languages I didn’t know; I would have felt more at home if I had heard French, Italian, German, or some other language that I knew or at least recognized, but there was none of it!
These people didn’t even look the same, and after having no home to return to, this increased my loneliness in that moment more than I had felt in a long time!
I went up to the top of the ship where no-one else was, and stared into the absolute blackness of the night, in the direction the ship was heading, with the sea wind full in my face.
Not a star could be seen, and feeling the growing distance from the land I knew behind me as I was pulled further and further away from it, together with knowing I had no means to get back to it whatsoever.
That’s when the panic set in!

Which animal is which animal?
And which animal knows?
My cats don’t know.
One presides over the waters.
Another one barks.
Bu which animal knows?
All protect us thru all.
My oldest is my youngest.
Still the tiniest thing.
…
Still the Heart of Mine.
Animals don’t know.
That is their gift.
Animals don’t know.
…
Unless they do?

My training in Science of Mind had begun with my mother. She took me to a different church every Sunday, and she encouraged me to question the minister afterward.
~Esther Williams
The question of religion was a matter for each individual’s conscience, and in a great many cases was the outcome of birth or residence in a certain geographical area.
~James Larkin
When Christians start thinking about Jesus, things start breaking down, they lose their faith. It’s perfectly possible to go to church every Sunday and not ask any questions, just because you like it as a way of life. They fear that if they ask questions they’ll lose their Christ, the very linchpin of their religion.
~A N Wilson
Fear is a question: What are you afraid of, and why? Just as the seed of health is in illness, because illness contains information, your fears are a treasure house of self-knowledge if you explore them.
~Marilyn Ferguson
Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.
~Thomas Jefferson
We like security: we like the pope to be infallible in matters of faith, and grave doctors to be so in moral questions so that we can feel reassured.
~Blaise Pascal
~
I was very, very religious. And of course I wrote about it in ‘Night.’ I questioned God’s silence. So I questioned. I don’t have an answer for that. Does it mean that I stopped having faith? No. I have faith, but I question it.
~Elie Wiesel
…I can only answer with another question: do you think we are wise enough to read God’s mind?
~Freeman Dyson
Religious belief, like history itself, is a story that is always unfolding, always subject to inquiry and ripe for questioning. For without doubt there is no faith.
~Jon Meacham
~
No man likes to have his intelligence or good faith questioned, especially if he has doubts about it himself.
~Henry Adams
I went to medical school because I wanted to ask the big questions. Do we have a soul? Does God exist? What happens after death?
~Deepak Chopra
Don’t question God, for He may reply: If you’re so anxious for answers, come up here.
~Freeman Dyson
The most erroneous stories are those we think we know best — and therefore never scrutinize or question.
~Stephen Jay Gould

~Joey Skaggs
A skeptic doubts the best authority; an enthusiast is likely to accept the poorest.
~James Lendall Basford
This is how humans are: We question all our beliefs, except for the ones we really believe, and those we never think to question.
~Orson Scott Card
I don’t think that the total creation took place in six days as we now measure time. If we can confirm, say, the Big Bang theory, that doesn’t at all cause me to question my faith that God created the Big Bang.
~Jimmy Carter
The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?
~Stephen Hawking
Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear.
~Thomas Jefferson

To imply that religious believers have no right to engage moral questions in the public square or at the ballot is simply to establish a Reichian secularism as our state faith.
~Maggie Gallagher
Can a mortal ask questions which God finds unanswerable? Quite easily, I should think. All nonsense questions are unanswerable.
~C S Lewis
It is not every question that deserves an answer.
~Publilius Syrus
Every question possessed a power that did not lie in the answer.
~Elie Wiesel
Science is wonderfully equipped to answer the question “How?” but it gets terribly confused when you ask the question “Why?”
~Erwin Chargaff
The riddle does not exist. If a question can be put at all, then it can also be answered.
~Ludwig Wittgenstein
I had a million questions to ask God: but when I met Him, they all fled my mind; and it didn’t seem to matter.
~Christopher Morley

Before you start some work, always ask yourself three questions – Why am I doing it, What the results might be and Will I be successful. Only when you think deeply and find satisfactory answers to these questions, go ahead.

~Immanuel Kant
——
The only history is a mere question of one’s struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.
~David Herbert Lawrence
That’s a central part of philosophy, of ethics. What do I owe to strangers? What do I owe to my family? What is it to live a good life? Those are questions which we face as individuals.
~Peter Singer
In the final analysis, the questions of why bad things happen to good people transmutes itself into some very different questions, no longer asking why something happened, but asking how we will respond, what we intend to do now that it happened.
~Pierre Teilhard de Chardin
The man who kicks up a shindy will probably improve the morals of mankind; he will beyond any question improve his own. In short, I believe getting into hot water. I think it keeps you clean.
~G K Chesteron

To a billion people around the world surviving on just a dollar a day, the question of what to eat tonight is more about life and death than about recipes.
~Giada De Laurentiis
You see, Africa makes a fool of our idea of justice. It makes a farce of our idea of equality. It mocks our pieties. It doubts our concern. It questions our commitment. Because there is no way we can look at what’s happening in Africa, and if we’re honest, conclude that it would ever be allowed to happen anywhere else.
~Bono
I don’t think anybody cares about unwed mothers unless they’re black or poor. The question is not morality, the question is money. That’s what we’re upset about.
~Toni Morrison
So long as you have food in your mouth, you have solved all questions for the time being.

The question of whether it’s God’s green earth is not at center stage, except in the sense that if so, one is reminded with some regularity that He may be dying.

Questions give us no rest. We know not why our curse makes us seek we know not what, ever and ever. But we cannot resist it. It whispers to us that there are great things on this earth of ours, and that we must know them.
