Quoted in the Grove:
We are masters of the unsaid words, but slaves of those we let slip out.
~Winston Churchill
Words can sting like anything, but silence breaks the heart.
~Phyllis McGinley
Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.
~George Eliot

With weekly practice and individual commitments to writing on the increase, the last couple years have witnessed a continuing improvement in the quality of work coming out of Thurs Word Games. With NaNoWriMo and illness laying waste to attendance at Thursday exercises, maintaining a weekly newsletter becomes harder to justify. This would make now a good time to rest and stretch a bit, then resume by reaching for the next level in Wordgrove’s writing game. When the Wordgrove Post & Review returns it will be with a new focus, published on a limited basis while staying with the old format.
Thursday chats and exercises will continue on Writers Platform and this editor will review all drops as before, but this newsletter will only publish when six accumulated pieces meet the single new standard for inclusion. To be published, each work will be looked at for that one quotable line, sentence or haiku that shines and stands out as a polished gem. Such scripted jewels are easily recognized. The thinking here is that the reach for that one quotable line will structurally nudge the surrounding work into stronger writing, thereby improving its neighborhood and the piece as a whole.
Beyond the prompts coming out of Thurs Word Games, authors should consider this an open invitation to write on any topic in any style desired. Length is limited to 500 words. Longer pieces should be hosted online by the author with a link provided. Wordgrove.com will be happy to provide pages upon request. Questions and suggestions should be addressed to BarTalk
