Quoted in the Grove:
Comedy and horror are opposite sides of the same coin. I have the heart of a child. I keep it in a jar on my shelf.
~Robert Bloch
If it weren’t for my lawyer, I’d still be in prison. It went a lot faster with two people digging.
~Joe Martin
Writing a good essay isn’t that easy. You can’t do it with a pointing stick. I try to make a point obliquely, adroitly, and whenever possible, with humor. It must always be a surprise. The surprise is what makes people laugh.

Since this week’s Impromptu was again preempted by chat (amazing the dimension that voice adds to chat), the search was on for filler material to round out the newsletter. Three different videos offering three different perspectives visited the porch in Belize this week. When worlds collide and views collude as conveniently as these three have, it’s time to pay attention. For your consideration:

Returning to the issue of chat. The good news is that people in this club really like each other and enjoy each other’s company. The really good news is that Wordgrove is the happy place where they like to meet for this. The not so good news is that the writing club part of Thurs Word Games has been allowed to atrophy
This not a new issue. There was a solution that worked before, and will likely work again if adhered to. Word Games start Thurs at 6pm PT/9pm ET. Those most interested in writing show up about this time, settle in, catch up on news, share videos, etc … and time passes. The window of time set aside for Impromptu gets used up in social frippery that might have added interest to the social group when they arrive
The solution remains the same as before: Word Game starts at 6 PT/9 ET, Impromptu starts an hour later at 7/9. People wanting to get together just for chat might find this a good time to arrive, settle in, read anything new that’s been dropped, chat, catch up with other late-arrivers and wait for the writers to return. Give us half an hour
This would be a good time to try a variation on Thur night’s success at Jessa’s new place on WG Pier. After returning from Impromptu, we could finish the fun, social part of the evening at member homes on a rotating basis. It’s a cozier, more intimate setting that seems to free up the silliness and warmth in everyone. Anyone visiting Wordgrove after the regrouping can be summoned. A Scroll can be left with a link. Possibilities abound, but a return to our writing focus remains the priority
