Quoted in The Grove: avatar
Early on, many years ago when we started ‘Avatar,’ the executive that we were working with said to make the sad scenes sadder, the funny scenes funnier, the scary scenes scarier. That was kind of permission to do what we felt comfortable with.
~Bryan Konietzko
You need virtual reality to understand high level science or high level math. It’s very helpful to explain third and fourth dimensional things that people are constantly addressing in quantum physics. But, as soon as you’re creating an avatar, and you can live and you can start to feel sensations on VR, that has gone too far.
~Jaden Smith
How many artists subscribe to the notion that creative success depends on input from the fickle muse or her modern avatar, mental illness? Probably very few.
~Kathryn Harrison
EndQuote:
I see myself as an avatar of curiosity and doubt.

The week stepped in early by pointing out how few good quotes there are on avatars, and maybe a better word could be found for Thanksgiving week. This last minute effort, much abbreviated (and flawed by the rush), at least gives the opportunity to remind that it’s a long, strenuous winter of isolation crouching to pounce out there, and it’s a long wait ’til spring.
This week the avatar, BarTalk, in the virtual world of There.com is hosting the annual Cultural Arts Week. It’s a free 3 day visit to pop in (have couple avatar-style names in mind), and we can walk about and talk, let you wander, or take a guided tour … or just talk. Email me, BarTalk or Dan, [email protected], to arrange a time in the evening for getting together. I’d like to meet some of the people who follow this blog.

Virtual Reality: the online home for avatars
The telephone is virtual reality in that you can meet with someone as if you are together, at least for the auditory sense.
~Ray Kurzweil
We experience virtual reality on most nights while we are asleep, through our dreams.
~Rajesh
Some people prefer to see the game in the television than to go to the stadium. With virtual reality this will go to be worse, but at the end the ‘real’ reality will win, because a virtual meal is not the same thing as a real one!
~Rodolfo Llinas
The thing that’s remarkably beautiful to me about virtual reality is that you can make up reality in virtual reality and share it with other people. It’s like having a collaborative lucid dream.
~Jaron Lanier
Virtual reality is the ‘ultimate empathy machine.’ These experiences are more than documentaries. They’re opportunities to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes.
~Chris Milk
Virtual reality is a self-created form of chosen reality. Therefore it exists.

The Hindi perspective
Hinduism is wholly free from the strange obsession of some faiths that the acceptance of a particular religious metaphysics is necessary for salvation, and non-acceptance thereof is a heinous sin meriting eternal punishment in hell.
~Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
Hinduism is not just a faith… Evil and error are not ultimate. There is no Hell, for that means there is a place where God is not, and there are sins which exceed his love.
~Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan
The essence of Hinduism is that the path may be different, but the goal is the same.
~Manmohan Singh
You are what you believe in. You become that which you believe you can become.
~Bhagavad Gita
