Quoted in the Grove:

After one has abandoned a belief in god, poetry is that essence which takes its place as life’s redemption.
~Wallace Stevens

I believe there’s a God — I believe the whole bag of tricks; there’s nothing I don’t believe; they could subdivide the Trinity into a dozen parts and I’d believe.
~Graham Greene

I was gratified to be able to answer promptly. I said I don’t know.
~Mark Twain

The Contest:
Life can be low farce and the show a pointless tragedy if one is base enough to see it that way. But to enjoy this show thru all its mazes, emotions and layered dimensions, and to take pleasure in the interweaving of its players, this is a gift. Your challenge: Distill the humor, render this drama in your most personal way so that it becomes the gift of yourself as a writer, the present of yourself to Wordgrove’s cast of readers who wait

Unsurprisingly, a noticeable cloud of dismay rose from interested Authors concerning the too-broad-to-be-useful theme of Drama for this year’s contest. Too much freedom overwhelms. Perhaps it will be helpful instead to think of it less as a theme, and more as a challenge to reach for vivid expression

There is, as example, a different dynamic in the ceremonies of early love and that of a final break-up. It is easy to use moonlight and tears for these stages, when in fact it is the difference between rumpled sheets and shattered glass, from pillow talk and morning coffee to shards of life and smithereens. With palpable images, to the vigilant writer everything embeds in Drama

Rubbing new words and connections together can generate the friction and electricity that’s useful in transmitting Drama. Scratch around in the soils of memory and imagination until you find the seed you like, and there’s the kernal of your poem or story. Use words to create pictures. Weed out the unnecessary. Write from wonder. Be vivid. There’s your Drama
